The Great War begins, and ends. Lasting only a scant 2 hours, most of Earth is reduced to cinders in that time. It begins in the early morning, U.S. Eastern Standard time. The United States and China deploy their nuclear arsenals. Other countries, seeing the missiles on their way, launch their planes and fire their warheads as well. Air raid sirens sound, but very few people heed the warning. The vaults are sealed. Two hours of nuclear bombardment later, the War ends, along with much of humanity.

In the immediate aftermath of the Great War, Edward rushes with Jack to Parson's, leaving an employee named Anders at Cabot House. Two days later (October 25), Anders tries to evict Emogene and wilhelmina from Cabot House at gunpoint. Emogene tries to force him out of the house, but he puts up a fight, and she ends up killing him.

After spending the past month trying to ensure Parson's stability with Jack, he notes that Edward has fallen seriously ill from radiation sickness due to being out in the aftermath too much. The next day (December 2), Emogene notes in her diary that Jack returned to Cabot House without Edward due to how sick he'd become, and that she doesn't think Jack expects him to live. But instead of dying, he begins the process of becoming a ghoul.

• since his father couldn't pay for babysitters, and they didn't really have extended family to rely on, little edward would accompany his father on jobs, later creating a foundation for his repair skills

• young edward, seeking stability and any amount of money he can bring into the house, falls in with troublemakers — starts with petty theft, but begins to graduate from there into lesser street gang activity
• edward unknowingly ends up an errand boy for a low ranking member of the mafia. as he got older, he proved to be reliable, and they rewarded him with pay, and even through connections, he was able to get minor construction jobs during the summers in mob-run companies
• by the time he grows into his full height and starts filling it out, he's well-liked enough to call several low ranking mafia members friends
